Lions Clubs International is the largest service club
organisation in the world. There are Clubs in 178 countries
or geographical locations with over 1.5 million members
throughout the world.
A
Brief History..
The
Lions organisation was started by Melvin Jones in America
in 1917, on the basis that a number of service minded
men could do more for their local community as a group
than as individuals. Their intention was to raise money
to support members of their community who were in need
and less fortunate than themselves.
Since
that time, the aims of the original organisation have
been recognised as having an application in every community
and, therefore, Lions Clubs International has grown
to the size it is today. Our motto and the the motto
of all clubs is “We Serve”. All club members
pay a membership fee to cover administration costs so
that all monies collected from the public can go directly
to the nominated charity or cause.
Lions
Clubs are concerned mainly with their local community,
but there is a Lions Clubs International Fund to which
all clubs subscribe. This fund is available immediately
in the event of a major disaster anywhere in the world.
In the event of a tragedy, funds are made available
to send to the nearest Lions Club to the disaster, for
use as they see fit, so that the monies are spent accordingly
and appropriately.
Romsey
Lions Club has 13 members and they meet on the second
Wednesday of the month at 8.00pm at the Abbey
Hotel, Church Street, Romsey. Telephone: 01794 513360
‘
In addition to our fund raising activities, which are
highly entertaining, we have a full social programme
for members and their partners. If you are new to the
area, joining Romsey Lions is an ideal way to find a
new circle of like minded friends'. |
